Welcome To New York's Upper East Side, Where we live and go to school and play and sleep - sometimes with each other. We all live in huge apartments with our own bedrooms and bathrooms and phone lines. We have unlimited access to money and booze and whatever else we want, and our parents are rarely home, so we have tons of privacy. We're smart, we've inherited classic good looks, we wear fantastic clothes, and we know how to party. Our shit still stinks, but you can't smell it because the bathroom is sprayed hourly by the maid with a refreshing scent made exclusively for us by French perfumers. It's a luxe life, but someone's got to live it. |

Tanabata
 The bamboo leaves rustle, rustle, *Sasa no ha sara-sara (笹の葉 さらさら)
shaking away in the eaves. *Nokiba ni yureru (軒端にゆれる)
The stars go twinkle, twinkle; *Ohoshi-sama kira-kira (お星様 キラキラ)
Gold and silver grains of sand. *Kingin sunago (金銀砂子)Once upon a time, there was a father who ruled the universe, his name let’s call him the Sky King. The Sky King had many daughters, but one who was very special to him, her name was called the Weaving Princess. She would weave the most wonderful cloth, and the Sky King loved the cloth that was made by the Milky Way. But everyday all the Weaving Princess would weave and work so hard, that she could never meet anyone special person to fall in love with and was very sad. The Sky King loved his daughter so much; it broke his heart to see his daughter so sad, he decided to introduce her to the Cow Herder Star, who lived at the other side of the Milky Way. It was love at first sight, and the Weaving Princess and the Cow Herder Star decided to marry. But after they were married, they would no longer continue to weave the fine cloth, and they would no longer look after all the cattle, and they ran wild throughout the heavens. In anger, the Sky King separated the two lovers, and forbid them from seeing each other, but the father could not resist the tears of his beloved daughter. Finally he agreed that they could meet every 7th day in the 7th month if they would work hard with their tasks. Finally the day came, and they were able to meet, but to their surprise, there was no bridge to cross over the river. The Weaving Princess was so sad, she cried so much a flock of magpies came and created a bridge with their wings so she could cross. It's said that if it rains that day, the Weaving Princess and Cow Herder Star cannot meet, and must wait another year to meet again. This story is a famous Chinese Folklore, which helped create the story of farmer and a mysterious robe he finds that is owned by a Goddess named Tanabata. When the famer meets the Goddess during her search for the robe, he denies that he has it, and in time they fall in love and marry. One day the Goddess finds the robe and realizes that the farmer lied to her, so she decides to punish him by leaving him, and only returning to see him if he weaves a thousand pairs of straw shoes. But he is unable to finish the shoes before he dies, and never meets Tanabata. However it is said that the lovers meet once a year, during the time when the star Altair and Vega intersect. During this day, people like to write their dreams or wishes on little pieces of paper called 短冊, (tanzaku) and tie them on to bamboo poles with other color decorations, usually made from origami paper. All around Japan you can find they colorful signs everywhere. The other day it was the special day for the princess and prince to meet, and it was such a beautiful day, I'm sure they met! I spent that day with my friend, and we went to a special live in Yoyogi park, where we were all given lanterns, and paper to write our dreams on. The live was an arrangement of various different singers and performers. If you do ever find yourself around Yoyogi park on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to check out all the live entertainment, you will find so many amazing and friendly people! So the other day, I posted I got my drivers license translated. it was pretty easy actually. Tomorrow I'm off to see if I can get my license. During that time I took a picture of what looks really neat. All these boats in the middle of Tokyo, a tiny river under a high way. |
